CARLING CUP SHOCKER !!
November 7th, 2006
FT RESULT : SOUTHEND 1-0 MANCHESTER UTD
Southend dumped Carling Cup holders Manchester United out of the competition at the fourth-round stage with a stunning victory at Roots Hall.
Manager Alex Ferguson included Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo in the starting line-up as the Red Devils looked to book a quarter-final place for the third time in four years, and the Red Devils line-up contained 10 full internationals.
FREE-KICK MAKES EASTWOOD’S DAY
Southend hero Freddy Eastwood had no regrets about sending Manchester United, the club he supports, crashing out of the Carling Cup.
It was a quality curling 27th-minute free-kick from Eastwood to grab the lead and then ManYoo could find no way to break Southend’s stern resistance.
United laid siege to the Southend goal for the final 20 minutes but too often Rooney and Ronaldo tried to force a way through on their own and the Shrimpers were able to keep them at bay.
At the final whistle the capacity crowd, who have not seen their team record a league win since mid-August celebrated wildly.
Ah .. the magic of the cup eh?
