US PGA Golf Betting Preview (Oakhills, August 7-10)

Phil Mickelson heads into the Championship as the favourite in the US PGA betting market at most sportsbooks. Popular Irish boomaker BoyleSports.com is currently offering the best odds on Mickelson to win at 11.00 (10/1) with Padraig Harrington second favourite at 21.00 (20/1) at Victor Chandler. With Tiger Woods on the sidelines, Lefty looks to win his first major at Oakmont since the 2006 Masters. Mickelson faded down the stretch to finish third at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational last weekend, bogeying three of the final four holes.
Vijay Singh (23.00* at BetFred) was the winner at the Invitational, cashing his first win for punters in 24 events. Singh finished with a 10-under 270 to take a one-shot victory over Lee Westwood (26.00* at Pinnacle Sports) and Stuart Appleby (51.00* at Ladbrokes), and is confident heading into Thursday.

The Oakmont Hills course has been lengthened, had some fairways narrowed, and had bunkers added for the tourney. Still, the greens remain the toughest part of the course, meaning sharp punters are handicapping players solid with the putter and accurate off the tee. Zach Johnson (101.00* at BetFred) is fourth on the Tour in driving accuracy at 74.9%, while Jeff Quinney (251.00* at Ladbrokes) is fourth in putting average at 1.736.
Johnson and Quinney are also battling for the final spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team, which is up for grabs with Woods out of the season. Also on the cusp of making the squad are D.J. Trahan (136.00* at PinnacleSports), Sean O’Hair (76.00* at PinnacleSports), and public favourite (151.00* at Bet365) Rocco Mediate.
