Angels vs. Red Sox

One team has the best record in baseball, the other is the defending World Series champion. It’s a shame this is only a five-game series.

Series Breakdown:
These two teams are very similar in terms of their makeup. Both teams have a strong defense to back up solid pitching staffs. The bullpens for both teams are also extremely talented with two of the game’s premier closers in “Little Papi” and K-Rod. You can run down the numbers from the regular season and try to find an edge for this team or the other, but the bottom line is that these two teams are probably No. 1 and No. 2 in baseball no matter how you look at it. Even though the Sox swept the Angels in the postseason last year, this year might be different: The Angels have beaten the Red Sox eight of nine times this season. Add to the Angels Mark Teixeira and the record-breaking season K-Rod is putting together, then subtract Hall of Fame hitter Manny Ramirez from the Red Sox lineup, and you have an Angels team that is as ready as they have ever been to knock off the World Series champs. This one should be a manager’s duel and a dandy to watch.

Rays vs. White Sox or Twins

The Tampa Bay Rays wait patiently as the winner of the one-game playoff and 163 games of the regular season to see whether it will be the White Sox or the Twins they play on Thursday.

Series Breakdown:
Either way you look at it, the Rays will be the favorite, as the bullpens for both the White Sox and the Twins have been shaky at best. The Swiss cheese White Sox defense could haunt them if they make it past the Twins. On the other hand, the Twins have put together an impressive late-season spurt, including a dramatic sweep of the White Sox, to put themselves in position to get into the postseason. One thing is for sure, whichever team emerges will have a tired pitching staff to face the Rays; that said, that team will have one or two playoff-type games under its belt heading into Thursday. Momentum and emotion can be tricky factors in the game of baseball. People have been expecting the Rays to crack all season long, and they haven’t. The question is, will this postseason be the time for the young Rays to establish their legacy in the shrines of baseball?

Chicago Bears vs. Detroit Lions
The Bears. The Lions won both meetings last year, and Brian Urlacher probably hasn’t forgotten it. The Lions are the worst in the league against the run so far this season, allowing an average of 207.7 YPG.  Detroit fans, meet Matt Forte. Diet Pepsi’s next Rookie of the Week.

Atlanta Falcons vs. Green Bay Packers
Michael Turner running on grass and the Falcons playing against a good team should be enough to dismiss them in favor of the Packers. It will all depend on whether or not Aaron Rodgers can play this weekend. If he’s out, Matt Ryan may be able to steal one.
 
Indianapolis Colts vs. Houston Texans
Nothing has come easy for the Colts this season, and so far Manning has looked almost human in the pocket. Missing the offseason has slowed their start, but they are getting to the point in the season where they should be able to start putting it back together on offense. The Texans probably won’t be able to pull it out.

San Diego Chargers vs. Miami Dolphins
Miami’s surprise demolition of the Patriots in Week 3 has been long forgotten. The Chargers have started to look better and the defense is finding itself after the loss of Shawne Merriman. The Dolphins will be a smart, tough and disciplined team… but it’s not 2010 yet.

Seattle Seahawks vs. New York Giants
The Giants are simply the best team in football. The defending champions are somehow being overlooked again this year. The Seahawks are playing like a team without any wide receivers… oh wait. The big question is whether David Carr will get into the game in the fourth quarter.

Washington Redskins vs. Philadelphia Eagles
Jason Campbell has taken some positive steps since the first game this season. Of course it could have just been the Giants making him look that bad. The Eagles without Brian Westbrook are a shadow of themselves and he is probably going to be a game-time decision. The Redskins should be able to eke out a win if he can’t go.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Denver Broncos
The Bucs’ defense has been solid all year. Derrick Brooks has found the fountain of youth and Barrett Ruud looks like he’s on his way to being one of the best MLBs in the league. The Broncos will have to put up another gazillion points if they want to win this one.

Buffalo Bills vs. Arizona Cardinals
The Cardinals were embarrassed last week and the Bills have been learning how to come back and win football games. This is one of the most improved teams in the league so far this season and the Cardinals should get one more check in the win column.

Cincinnati Bengals vs. Dallas Cowboys
Terrell “Me-O” Owens wants the ball. Felix Jones and Marion Barber NEED the ball. If they expect to win any more games they are going to give the ball to the runners and punish other teams. The Bengals are terrible. At least they signed another player with police problems. Cedric Benson, welcome to the “Mean Machine.”

New England Patriots vs. San Francisco 49ers
The Patriots will rebound. They were outcoached, outhustled, and flat out outplayed in their last game against the Dolphins. That won’t happen again. And it won’t happen against the lowly 49ers. Look for Wes Welker to have a big game as he runs more routes under the coverage and tries to make plays after the catch.

Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
Jaguars. The Steelers squeaked out a win on Monday night, but the loss of Kendall Simmons is devastating. Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers likely won’t make the playoffs now.

Minnesota Vikings vs. New Orleans Saints
The Saints looked like a new team with Deuce McAllister in the backfield. The Vikings are shaping up to be one of the biggest disappointments of the season. As long as Reggie Bush doesn’t try to run in between the tackles EVER again, the Saints should get the big Monday night win.
