The UEFA Intertoto Cup enters it’s final round – with 11 games scheduled – and the 11 winners will all be added into the UEFA Cup second preliminary round.
That might not sound like a big deal – but with club squads so expensive to assemble these days many clubs will fight hard to get a share of the European football pie and there are three big sides who have got direct entry into this stage.
Newcastle United, Villarreal, and Marseille were all semi-finalists in the 2003/04 UEFA Cup, and of course Villarreal subsequently went on to the semi-finals of the Champions league last season.
All three sides are at home for the first leg of their ties on Saturday and although all three are short priced favourites they may well be worth taking in a treble as they should win comfortably.
Certainly Newcastle United are taking this match very seriously – manager Glenn Roeder has said that Newcastle will travel to Oslo on Wednesday thus allowing his side 4 days to acclimitise for the second leg of the tie.
“We are preparing to go to Lillestrom in the same way as we would if we were going to Chelsea or Manchester United” said Roeder in a press conference this week.
That’s enough for me to be interested in getting on the Geordies to win the first match.
