One More Day Until Results in the Irish Egg Extravaganza

Paddy Power Bookmaker egg betsWell if you’ve not checked up on Paddy Power bookmaker’s charity betting on hatching eggs, you’re a sad bastard! Really.

What with live streaming video and the odds on first hatchling and other fun betting markets changing all the time, the BookieLabRat.com team, like a whiole heap of punters, are in eager anticipation of chicks. .. and they’re probably due tomorrow! One day to go!

Four of the ten eggs were removed from the hatchery as infertile a week or so back, but the news for the remaining six eggs is good…here’s Paddy’Power.com’s latest posting…

I moved egg7 and it chirped!!! – Wed 6th August 2008
Just 30 mins ago Duncan popped in to prepare for the final stage of Eggycam. This involved turning off the thingy that rotates the eggs (they are now in the positions they will hatch in), adding water (to make the incubator even MORE humid) and lowering the heat to 37.0 degrees Celsius (they’ve been living at a balmy 37.7 for the past 19 days)…

US PGA Golf Betting Preview (Oakhills, August 7-10)

US PGA Golf BettingThe first players tee off at Oakmont Hills on Thursday morning at 7:30 AM ET, so get your bets on to cash some value.

Phil Mickelson heads into the Championship as the favourite in the US PGA betting market at most sportsbooks. Popular Irish boomaker BoyleSports.com is currently offering the best odds on Mickelson to win at 11.00 (10/1) with Padraig Harrington second favourite at 21.00 (20/1) at Victor Chandler.  With Tiger Woods on the sidelines, Lefty looks to win his first major at Oakmont since the 2006 Masters. Mickelson faded down the stretch to finish third at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational last weekend, bogeying three of the final four holes.

Vijay Singh (23.00* at BetFred) was the winner at the Invitational, cashing his first win for punters in 24 events. Singh finished with a 10-under 270 to take a one-shot victory over Lee Westwood (26.00* at Pinnacle Sports) and Stuart Appleby (51.00* at Ladbrokes), and is confident heading into Thursday.

View the Latest Golf Betting OddsCould this be the year a European-born golfer wins the PGA Championship? Bet365 Sportsbook has both British Open champion Padraig Harrington and Spaniard Sergio Garcia posted at 21.00*. A European player hasn’t won the Championship since 1930, so tread lightly when laying down on Harrington, Garcia, and others this week.

The Oakmont Hills course has been lengthened, had some fairways narrowed, and had bunkers added for the tourney. Still, the greens remain the toughest part of the course, meaning sharp punters are handicapping players solid with the putter and accurate off the tee. Zach Johnson (101.00* at BetFred) is fourth on the Tour in driving accuracy at 74.9%, while Jeff Quinney (251.00* at Ladbrokes) is fourth in putting average at 1.736.

Johnson and Quinney are also battling for the final spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team, which is up for grabs with Woods out of the season. Also on the cusp of making the squad are D.J. Trahan (136.00* at PinnacleSports), Sean O’Hair (76.00* at PinnacleSports), and public favourite (151.00* at Bet365) Rocco Mediate.

2008 Beijing Olympics Soccer Betting – Argentina Favourites to Retain Gold Medal

Olympics FootballOlympics Football betting markets are now available at all good online sportsbooks, with the tournament kicking off August 7th, one day before the official opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympic games.

Popular handicap bookmaker PinnacleSports.com has Argentina, the defending Gold Medallists, favourites priced at 2.880*.

The Argentines grabbed gold in 2004 by beating Paraguay in the final in Athens. Carlos Tevez was the tournament’s top-scorer, but won’t be appearing this time around. However, Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Liverpool’s Javier Mascherano, are just two big names from another hugely talented squad.

Though soccer wasn’t included in the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, a men’s team event has featured at every Olympiad since, excepting in 1932. A women’s event was added for the Atlanta games in 1996, and has become cemented as part of the Olympic schedule ever since.

The original Olympic ethos was that participants should be amateurs, helping to ensure fairness. The International Olympic Committee struggled to maintain this principal up to the 1970’s in the face of ‘full time amateurs’ from Eastern Bloc nations, but as sport became increasingly monetised, it was inevitable that the Olympics would have to change. Today the only Olympic event with solely amateur participants, is Boxing, but there are specific regulations associated with the Men’s soccer event that it is important for punters to be aware of.

Olympics Men Soccer – The U23 World Cup

Professional soccer players have been admitted to represent their countries at the Olympics since 1984 Los Angeles Games, but the IOC didn’t want to steal the World Cup’s thunder, so provided some stipulations which has the event evolve into an ‘Under-23 World Cup. Teams are however allowed to field three players over 23, which for the Beijing Games should guarantee some household names. Bettors will not however see any British players take the field, as Great Britain doesn’t provide a representative team, instead each of its four constituents – England, Wales, Scotland and N.Ireland – compete individually within FIFA events.

Given the nature of the regulations for Olympic soccer, the historical results don’t mirror that for the World Cup. Brazil for example have never won gold, but the inclusion in the Brazilian squad for Beijing 2008 of Ronaldinho by coach, Dunga, underlines the desire to capture a soccer Gold medal. The participation of the over stars isn’t guaranteed as clubs are only legally obliged to released u23 players, but Brazil will have three Premier League stars including Jo (recently signed for to Man City for a club record), Anderson (Man Utd) and Lucas Leiva (Liverpool).

Despite the presence of such big names, PinnacleSports.com price Brazil as 3.420* second favourites in their Men’s Olympic soccer betting behind their South American rivals, Argentina.
