Leicester City win English Premier League

Leicester City started the season as 5000-1 outsiders and have ended the season as league champions with two games to spare.

It was the first time since Nottingham Forest in 1978 that a team in England won the top division for the first time, and with money increasingly dominating the top of the game it seemed unlikely that ANY club would do it for the foreseeable future.

Hindsight shows that the bookmakers were probably a little bit lax to start The Foxes at 5000-1 after the arrival of a new big spending owner who splashed out 83m on 23 new players, and ignoring their end to last season when they won 7 of the last nine fixtures – but no-one expected the unsung Leicester City side to last at the top of the table all season.

Should we have been surprised though?

Looking at the other big leagues in Europe, they had all had “first-time” winners over the last 25 years- two of them in the last decade.

– Italy celebrated Sampdoria winning in 1991
– Spain had Deportivo La Coruna in 2000
– Germany saw Wolfsburg win in 2009
– France witnessed Montpellier succeed in 2012

So yes it was a long shot, but perhaps not quite as long as those 5000-1 odds the bookmakers offered, and I suspect that we will see a little more thought put into those league winning odds at the start of the 2016-17 season in August!

Stake-back Betting a major bonus at BetFred Bookmaker

It is surprising how often bookmaker specials are a load of Cr#p. We’ve found that that is not the case at Betfred – this popular online sportsbook has recently had to pay out big bucks several weeks running to punters who took advantage of it’s “Money Back Specials” or “Cash Back Offers”.

…And while we are confident Betfred won’t be bleeding cash as the result of the payouts, it certainly leaves a losing punter with a far better feeling to at least get their stake back.

Click to visit Betfred BookmakerHere’s the special offers on this weekend’s games at Betfred Bookmaker (weather dependent as it looks like many won’t play!!):

Paddy Power has Chelsea as favourites to win 2010/11 EPL title

The latest English Premier League 2010/11 Outright Betting odds from Paddy Power have Chelsea as favourites to defend the title that they won last season.

Manchester United are second favourites despite a very quiet close season so far, and it’s the spending power of cross-town rivals Manchester City that has pushed the “citizens” into third spot despite only finishing 5th last season.

Arsenal are fourth favourites at 8.00 (7/1) with the bookmakers obviously still doubtful as to where the playing future of captain Cesc Fabregas lies, and as I think that Fabregas will be at Arsenal for this season at least – this price appeals.

Liverpool are in 5th after the departure of manager Rafa Benitez and the appointment of Roy Hodgson at a price of 13.00 (12/1) and that could represent a useful wager if Hodgson can hold on to his key players in Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard.

Tottenham are not fancied at all this season, despite finishing 4th last season, with Spurs dropping to 6th in favourtism, with the general thinking that the inaugural season in the Champions League might distract the North London side from domestic duties.

Full list of odds of the top eight teams from 2009/10 – with their position and points from last season in brackets.

2.62 Chelsea  (Champions in 2009/10 with 86 points)
3.25 Man Utd (Runners-up – 85 points)
6.00 Man City (5th place – 67 points)
8.00 Arsenal  (3rd place – 75 points)
13.00 Liverpool (7th place – 63 points)
34.00 Tottenham (4th place – 70 points)
34.00 Aston Villa (6th place – 64 points)
201.00 Everton  (8th place – 61 points)

England are out of the World Cup – but you can still bet on them!

With England’s latest World Cup failures heading home from another humiliating exit from the Beautiful Game’s top event, Paddy Power are betting on who amongst the manager and players are likely to be put out to pasture.

Who is going to jump from the England Set-up? :
————————————————–

First and foremost manager Fabio Capello future looks doomed with the odds at just 1/2 (1.50) that Capello has left the post by the time of England’s next match against Hungary on August 11th. Its 6/4 Capello survives.

In a likely clear out of an ageing squad Paddy Power is also taking bets on who will officially announce their retirement from international football before England’s next match against Hungary on August 11th.

35 year old David Beckham, never shy of an impeccably timed media announcement, is the shortest price to call it a day at 4/9 (1.44) followed by 39 year old keeper David James at 4/7. (1.63) Other big names being tipped to retire include Rio Ferdinand and John Terry at 6/1 with Steven Gerrard 10/1.

Finally – a summary of the winning results in the England World cup betting specials at Paddy Power :

Winning Pre-tournament England Bets At The World Cup :
—————————————————

5/2 England knocked out in the last 16
5/1 Germany to be the team who knocks out England
7/1 England to score none-five goals in the tournament
7/1 Rooney to score no goals at the World Cup
5/4 Gerrard to score one goal at the World Cup
11/8 Defoe to score one goal at the World Cup
20/1 “Bobby Moore” to be the England v Germany first Commentary Cliché used

Perhaps you’d rather forget about the football ?

Or if you’d rather put the football fiasco behind you altogether … anyone for tennis?

English Premier League – End of Season 2009/10 bets

There are just 8-9 games to go in the Premier League, and the markets are hotting up in the race for the title, and relegation betting as well, with additional markets for finishing in the top four and earning a Champions League spot.

PREMIER LEAGUE WINNER
Manchester United and Chelsea are now joint favourites for the Premier League title with European firm Interwetten offering prices of 2.60 for each of the two clubs to win the league.

London club, Arsenal are 3rd favourite at 3.75 at Victor Chandler, as the only other viable option for the title now.

TOP FOUR BETTING
Meanwhile Manchester City are 2.70 favourites to finish fourth this season, despite their 1-1 draw at Sunderland on Sunday.

Spurs, who are currently two points ahead of City in fourth place, are 3.25 having defeated Blackburn 3-1 on Saturday while Liverpool are 3.50 and Aston Villa are 5.00

(all top four prices taken from Irish bookmaker Paddy Power)

RELEGATION BETTING
At the bottom of the Portsmouth are certainties for relegation and unbackable, while Burnley are almost certain to join them priced at a top 1.22 at Betfred, following a 2-1 home defeat against fellow strugglers Wolves.

Hull City are fancied as the 3rd side to go down (odds 1.62 at Bet365) while Wolves have now skipped out to 3.25 (also at Bet365).
