FA Community Shield : Chelsea v Liverpool

It seems an age since the end of the 2005/06 club football season, and Premier League fans finally get a taste of the action again in Cardiff this weekend for the FA Community Shield – the traditional top-flight curtain-raiser.

It’s a nothing “trophy” immediately forgotten almost as soon as it’s won – but it will give winning sides fans bragging rights for the first few weeks of the season.

Basically, it’s still a pre-season game, it’ll be hot and both sides will be tactically cautious not wanting to concede the first goal.

I’ll go for a scoreline of Chelsea 1-0 Liverpool and will take a bet on Chelsea to keep a clean sheet.

Arsenal are a step closer to Champions League

Arsenal earned last a 3-0 qualifying win over Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday. After a goalless first half, the Croatian champions’ hopes of an upset in the third qualifying round, first leg were dashed by one goal from Spain midfielder Cesc Fabregas and another by Dutch striker Robin van Persie in under two minutes.

Fabregas later added his second of the evening to seal a convincing win that makes Arsenal clear favourites to reach the group stage. 🙂

College Football : Ohio State #1?

The coaches pre-season poll is out – and after all the chopping and changing during the off-season they’ve given the nod to the Ohio State Buckeyes with 28 first place votes.

Defending champions Texas are #2, with Notre Dame, USC and Oklahoma rounding out the top five choices.

Further back are Auburn, West Virginia, Florida, LSU and Florida State compete the top 10.

We say :

The coaches can say what they like – I still expect USC to get to the BCS Championship game again this season – so any poll that has them outside the top two teams is missing the point in my book. 🙂

Baseball : LA Dodgers extend streak to 10 games

The Los Angeles Dodgers extended their winning streak to 10 games with a 7-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies.

The Dodgers’ winning streak, which is five games shy of the franchise record set way back in 1924, has co-incided with a run where they have conceded just one error in those games.

Los Angeles are now over .500 at 57-55 and are just a game and a half back behind the slumping San Diego Padres in the NL West Standings

Weekend Friendly Results

A mixed bag of results on the Satruday as there was a selection of good, bad, and ugly.

Lanna GoIF 1 Reading 10

Let’s start with the good as Premiership new boys Reading had a resounding 10-1 thumping victory over Swedish amateurs Lanna GoIF. Of course it will not prepare them for the English Premier League – but it’s surely going to do a power of good for the confidence.

Also impressing were Fulham who beat Monchengladbach 1-0 and Blackburn who beat Aachen 3-2.

The bad came in the form of Newcastle’s very dodgy effort in drawing 3-3 at home to Villarreal. The Spanish side (who were knocked out of the Intertoto Cup) where in complete control for the opening 70 minutes and only two Nicky Butt goals gave Newcastle parity – after Villarreal had stepped off the gas.

And the ugly was Manchester Utd’s 1-0 win over Ajax, not for the result but because Michael Carrick lasted just 14 minutes before being helped off after sustaining what seemed to be an injury to his left ankle.

That was the last thing that the Red Devils needed after Scholes and Rooney were sent off in the first match.

The English Premier League kicks off in 14 days on August 19th .. and I can hardly wait. 🙂

Fran Merida is a Gooner !

After all the speculation about Fran Merida, it has finally been revealed that he is a gooner. He played in the Arsenal XI against Boreham Wood on Friday (when the first side was facing Alkmaar).

Merida marked his first appearance on English soil with a goal to remember as a youthful Arsenal XI eased to 4-0 victory at Boreham Wood. Lupoli found Merida in space 25 yards out and the young Spaniard fizzed a swerving shot into the roof of the net past a bemused keeper.

Merida was well sort after by several clubs (including Barcelona where he was on youth forms) and was signed much in the same way as Cesc Fabregas – through the same agent.

Barcelona will not be happy – but it serves them right for all the rubbish newpaper talk that they continually put us through with Henry over the last three seasons. 🙂

Friday Friendly Results.

Friday, August 04, 2006, 7pm CET

AZ Alkmaar   0
Arsenal         3

Gilberto 36, Adebayor 52, Van Persie 74 (pen)

Arsenal warmed up for their crucial Champions League qualifying tie at Dinamo Zagreb next week with a comfortable 3-0 win against AZ Alkmaar on Friday night.

Goals from Gilberto, Emmanuel Adebayor and Robin van Persie saw Arsène Wenger’s side complete their pre-season in fine style. 🙂

 ————-

Other results :

Man United 3 beat Porto 1
(but both Rooney & Scholes sent off)

FC Mainz 5 beat Liverpool 0 !!!!
Liverpool played all the names with Hyppia, Traore, Gerrard, Alonso, Pennant, Crouch and Bellamy in the starters – but looked very disorganised at the back.

Thurs 3rd Aug : Irish Eircom Division One

Just a quick post to say that if you’re looking for a Thursday night bet to place then you could do worse than consider a wager on Dundalk to beat Kildare Country in the Eircom First Division.

One of the regulars on our partner site forum at GoonersGuide.com is a guy called Wally who is pretty clued up on the Irish scene and he’s a Dundalk fan in particular so he’s very tuned into what is going on at the club.

He’s written a bettting preview on the Dundalk main site and is pretty confident about the home sides changes going for a 3-0 home win.

You can get on Dundalk for at a price of about 1.85 with PinnacleSports going for 1.90 as the top price. Get on it.
